Shellac, polys, and lacquer are all non-toxic once cured (dry). However, none will stand up to harsh washing or soaking and should not be used where long contact with moisture will be happening.
Shellac and polyurethane will yellow with age. The poly-acrylics do not yellow. Lacquer doesn’t yellow.
I like gloss lacquer as it is fast to dry, goes on well, and can be polished and buffed to a very high shine.
